Some Observations in the Use of PCOS Machines for 2010
Practical problems for lawyers, coordinators and watchers stemming from the technical problems of computerization will be discussed in detail in the seminar, such as:
· Source code has not been released yet to political parties, etc.
· There will be 82,200 PCOS Machines to be used for 2010 using a u Linux 4.0.6 operating system; PCOS Installer v1.12.1+; PCOS application will be a v1.29+
· Each precinct will be given ONE activation button (RF key) assigned to a member of the BEI; this is one of the things that should be watched for the casting and counting procedure.
· The embedded Linux+ voting application v1.29 in firmware is essentially a closed special purpose system. This is GOOD because it can’t be affected by viruses and malware but BAD because this can actually be RIGGED by internal authorized users; and can either be a ground for a pre-proclamation controversy or failure of elections in the precinct where this happens depending on the circumstances.
· The PCOS machine is a stand-alone machine. This will connect via GPRS modem to the Internet for five (5) minutes only per destination. This is GOOD because this will be difficult to hack by external hackers but BAD because the shared GPRS modem would be TOO SLOW.
